Government departments

Names of government departments and their abbreviations vary in format around Australia. In some states or territories, the name of the state or territory is a formal part of the name of the department, whereas in others it might need to be added as a descriptor (depending on the context and the audience):

Australian Government Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C)

Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia (DAFWA)

Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA)

Victorian Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP Victoria)

Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment (DPIPWE)

Check each department’s website to ensure that you are using the correct name (since ministerial portfolios and departments regularly change) and format.
