What citing is not

Citing ≠ permission to reuse

Including a citation for something does not give us permission to reuse it.

The Copyright Act 1968 (Cwlth) allows people to use copyright material without the copyright owner’s permission in certain situations. These include making a ‘fair dealing’ for certain purposes. (Australian Copyright Council)

Warning! Don’t reproduce a figure or table without checking the reuse provisions of the publication.

Noting a fact established by someone else is different from reusing their own words and content. Here is an example of reuse conditions. You may not even be able to reuse your own work (eg take a figure from a previous publication) if you transferred copyright when you published the original.
