Planning your writing – the big picture

What this module is about

The aim of this module is to help you get started on your writing project.

You’ll look at the really big picture – what the project is to achieve, who’s going to read it and what they are supposed to get out of it. By the end, you’ll know how to decide what kind of document (or website), language and tone will suit your aims.

More formally, by the end of this module, learners should:

  • know that a plan is important, and know what to consider before starting to write
  • be able to identify the purpose of their writing
  • know they must match the format and style to the purpose
  • be ready to think about their audience and how that shapes the project
  • know when to use ‘push’ and when to ‘pull’
  • be able to work out their constraints.

How it works

You’ll be presented with a series of pages. Please read through them and attempt any activities. When you complete an activity, click ‘Check’, and some feedback (and sometimes more content) will be revealed.

Use the ‘previous’ and ‘next’ links to move forward and back through the module. You can visit any page as often as you like.

Each activity is accompanied by possible answers, though sometimes there is no one right answer.
