Structure summary

If you build a house ...

... you don’t start laying bricks before you know where the doors or windows are going to be. In the same way, we must know the structure of our project before we create a lot of content. Remember:

  • The main components of a large document are front matter, body, end matter.
  • The sections we need and the order they come in gives the structure of the body of the text.
  • Headings and the resulting table of contents can help test a suggested structure.
  • Good planning avoids repetition, helps the document flow, and makes it more persuasive and comprehensible.
