What makes a document effective?

An effective document or website is one that achieves its aims

If we are to plan, we must know what we want to achieve. Our writing will be effective if it achieves its aims, so:

  • why are we writing?
  • who is supposed to read it?
  • what are they supposed to get out of it?

These basic questions shape what we do. They tell us what form the project must take (thesis, pamphlet, website …), and what kinds of images and language to use.

This high-quality content we have worked so hard to create must be easy to find. That means we arrange it logically and signpost it with sensible headings, and avoid distractions and clutter.

Some of the things listed might be nice, but do they help?

This module is about the big picture, so we’re not going to say much about specific topics in grammar, spelling and word choice. We’ll look more closely at those details in other modules.
