Fewer and less

Fewer and less are not interchangeable in formal writing.

Use fewer if you are talking about a countable noun (ie a specific thing that can be turned into a plural):

fewer animals fewer books fewer lemons

Use less if you are talking about a mass noun (ie an abstract noun or thing that cannot be counted and turned into a plural):

less hope less capacity less soil less sugar
